Before the shift 04:55 what we need from you

If you need people.

MTEK People is an employment business: we supply temporary workers who remain under your direction while they are on your site, rather than placing permanent staff. That distinction decides who does what below, and it is worth being clear about before the first shift rather than during it.

Mon 04:55

Telling us a shift is going to be short

the call

Send it however is quickest — written is better than spoken at five in the morning, because it can be forwarded without being remembered wrongly. What matters is that six things arrive together, since each one of them removes or adds people we can offer.

The part most often left out is the ticket. “Someone with a counterbalance licence” and “someone who has driven one before” are different requests and produce different people, and the gate will only accept one of them.

Six things in one message

  • Site, gate, and who to report to
  • Start time and expected finish
  • What the work physically involves
  • Tickets or cards your gate requires
  • Protective equipment you issue, and what to bring
  • One shift, or the rest of the week

What we check before anybody is offered to you

our side

Every check below happens before a name reaches you, not afterwards. Right to work is verified from original documents or a share code for everybody, without exception and regardless of how familiar the person is.

We also check the shift against the hours that person has already worked this week and the rest they have had since their last one. If accepting your shift would break the eleven hours between shifts, we will tell you we cannot cover it rather than send somebody and let the problem surface on your site.

Before a name reaches you

  1. Right to work, from the original or a share code
  2. The ticket your gate asks for, seen not promised
  3. Experience of the actual work
  4. Travel that exists at that hour of the morning
  5. Hours and rest, against the Working Time Regulations 1998

Mon 06:00

What you get from us in writing

in writing

The Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003 require an employment business to agree its terms with a hirer before supplying anybody, and to confirm who is being supplied. You therefore get two documents: terms of business, once, at the start of the relationship; and a confirmation for each shift naming the person, the times and the work.

Charges are quoted to you directly, in those terms, for your sites and your shift patterns. We do not publish rates on a website, because a number with no shift attached to it is of no use to either of us.

Who holds what

MTEK People Your site contract with the worker pay, tax, deductions right to work, rest hours written terms both ways the work itself induction, supervision site rules, equipment confirming the hours

Mon 06:45

At your gate, a quarter of an hour early

arriving

Somebody we supply arrives before the start so that your induction happens before the shift rather than instead of the first half hour of it. While they are with you they work under your direction, to your site rules, on your equipment — and your duties to everyone working on that site cover them in the same way they cover your own staff.

If the work turns out to be different from the work described, we would rather have the phone call than have somebody quietly moved onto a machine they hold no ticket for. Moving a worker to other duties needs their agreement, and sometimes a qualification they do not have; it takes two minutes to check and it is cheaper than the alternative.

Confirming hours, and the limits around them

WTR 1998

At the end of the week you confirm the hours actually worked. Where they differ from the hours booked we ask why before anything is processed, because a shift that ran on and a gate closed by weather look identical on a total and are not the same event.

The limits in the Working Time Regulations 1998 apply to the pattern, not to any one shift, which is why consecutive long days need a conversation before they are offered. You can put a pattern through the rest-break checker yourself.

The three figures that bind a pattern

Inside the shift
Twenty uninterrupted minutes once working time passes six hours, away from the work position.
Between shifts
Eleven consecutive hours, which caps how early a worker can be called back after a long day.
Across the week
Forty-eight hours averaged over seventeen weeks, and twenty-four uninterrupted hours off in each seven days.

Week 12

When the same cover keeps coming back

AWR 2010

A morning’s cover sometimes becomes a standing arrangement, and the Agency Workers Regulations 2010 then need something from you. From day one an agency worker is entitled to use your facilities on the same footing as your own staff — canteen, car park, transport, the places people actually eat — and to be told about vacancies with you.

After twelve calendar weeks in the same role the worker becomes entitled to the basic working and employment terms a person you recruited directly into that job would have. Only you know what those are, so we ask for them as the twelve weeks come into view. It is a short conversation in week ten and an expensive one in week twenty.

What we ask you for, and when

At the start
Your terms of business agreed, and the facilities an agency worker on your site may use.
Each shift
Gate, times, work, tickets, and confirmation of the hours afterwards.
Approaching week twelve
The basic terms for that role, so equal treatment is worked out from your facts rather than our guess.

Plainly

Work we will not take

honest limits

We hold no licence from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, so we do not supply labour into agriculture, horticulture, shellfish gathering, or the processing and packaging of food and drink, which are the sectors where that licence is required. If your work falls in one of them, we are the wrong supplier and will say so on the first call.

We also take no shift we cannot describe honestly to the person going to it, and none that needs a ticket nobody available actually holds. Saying no at five in the morning is unwelcome; sending the wrong person is worse. Anything to discuss goes to shifts@mtekpeople.live.
